Calcium Supplements In IBS

Calcium supplements in IBS have been used to help diarrhea symptoms associated with the Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

They have also be used in other chronic diarrhea conditions such as post-cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) diarrhea and alternating symptoms in conjunction with magnesium.

Whilst there is currently no trial data, there is no doubt that a lot of clients have noticed a significant improvement in their symptoms.

The improvement may be delayed, so you won’t necessarily see it straight away. In fact, it can take several weeks to show some improvement in your symptoms.

Preparations

There are 2 main options - Carbonate or Citrate.

Citrate is absorbed more than Carbonate, but doesn't seem to work as well as Carbonate in my opinion.

There are 3 preparations of Calcium Carbonate that I would recommend.

These are Caltrate Plus treatment, Caltrate 600 D Plus minerals and Caltrate with Vitamin D.

I will differentiate between each of the above products later, but first of all I would like to outline how this mineral is thought to work in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the foods containing it.

In Irritable Bowel Syndrome

If you look on the net you will find references to Calcium supplements in IBS, but how does it work?

The mineral is absorbed from food in your gut and and for this to happen you need Vitamin D.

The normal adult requirement is 1000mg a day.

Your body utilizes this in the production of bone (90%) and 10% elsewhere in your body.

Its main use, other than bone formation, is in muscle contraction. It is required in all muscles including the heart and gut.

When the gut muscles aren't getting enough calcium, the gut contractions become disorganised and diarrhea develops.

Foods High In Calcium

This mineral is normally found in most people’s diet.

The main foods that contain this mineral include dairy products (Milk, Butter and Cheese), most fish, green stalked vegetables such as Broccoli and Kale as well as grains.

It is also in chick peas and spinach. They are, for most people, the natural best calcium supplements in IBS.

However, for a lot of people, these foods are difficult to eat because of intolerance and “herein lies the problem”.

Some foods, particularly cereals are fortified with the mineral which may or may not help depending on your tolerances.

Is It Dangerous?

When administered in the doses advised below, it is rarely a problem.

Certain medical conditions could be an issue and you should always check with your doctor if you have any health complaints.

If you have Hyperparathyroidism, where the body’s calcium levels are high, this mineral should be avoided.

In some cancerous conditions, levels in the blood can be high so you should discuss this with your doctor first.

If you suffer from renal or gallstones you should also discuss this further with you doctor as stones are usually made of calcium.

Finally, blood pressure medications can be affected by this mineral and if you suffer from blood pressure issues, discuss with your doctor.

Supplements To Buy

Caltrate Plus Tablets

Buy

Caltrate 600 plus tablets contain Calcium Carbonate 600mg, Vitamin D 400IU, Vitamin K 20mcg, Magnesium 50mg, Zinc 7.5mg, Copper 1mg and Manganese 1.8mg.

The normal adult dose is 0ne or Two tablets with food a day.

I would recommend this for  IBS-A.

In IBS-D and older sufferers, absorption from the gut is improved with the higher doses of Vitamin D.

It also contains magnesium, so if you find constipation is an issue then you may find the “plain” Caltrate with Vitamin D more effective for you.

Caltrate 600 D Plus Minerals

Buy

These contain Calcium Carbonate 600mg, but a higher dose of Vitamin D at 1600IU.

This formulation is again better for older sufferers, particularly when a trial of Caltrate 600 Plus tablets have been ineffective.

It is also better in those with other bowel disorders as the higher dose of Vitamin D will help aid absorption of the mineral.

The normal dose is one or two tablets with food a day.

Caltrate With Vitamin D

Buy

Caltrate with Vitamin D contain Calcium Carbonate 600mg and Vitamin D 200IU.

There is very little Magnesium in this and a lower dose of Vitamin D. It is more suitable for younger people with IBS and in those who have used the 600 plus tablets, but have become constipated.

The normal dose is one or two tablets with food a day.

All of the above preparations are free of preservatives and gluten so are safe to take in patients with celiac disease.

They are also lactose free so okay to take if you suffer from Lactose intolerance.

I hope now have a better idea of calcium supplements in IBS.
